MISSION AND GOALS

SciPlay was developed to engage more children in science by helping them make connections to science concepts and scientific habits of mind through play on outdoor playgrounds. SciPlay’s goal is twofold:

• To inspire interest in science through play and activities on outdoor playgrounds;
• To encourage teachers to view the playground as a resource for engaging students in science learning and sense-making.

OVERVIEW

SciPlay is a new initiative inviting New York City pubic school educators, students, parents and their local school communities to embrace the wonders of science — from physics to physical activity; from plant science to gardening -– on their local playgrounds. SciPlay is associated with Mayor Bloomberg’s PlaNYC Schoolyards to Playgrounds initiative to ensure that every New Yorker lives within 10 minutes walk of a green space. Schoolyards to Playgrounds includes the renovation of 290 currently underutilized, urban schoolyards. SciPlay will provide resources to these schools to leverage equipment on the playground to inspire young minds, stimulate curiosity and, ultimately, engage more children in science.
